Catholic Diocese of Kakamega

The Diocese of Kakamega was originally part of the Diocese of Kisumu under the jurisdiction of Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti. On February 27th 1978, the Diocese of Kisumu was divided and the Diocese of Kakamega was created.

The Diocese of Kisumu came under the Jurisdiction of of Rt. Rev Zachaeus Okoth while the Diocese of Kakamega came under the Jurisdiction of Rt. Rev Philip Sulumeti. On 27th April 1987, the Diocese of Bungoma was created from split of the Diocese of Kakamega. The Diocese of Bungoma became under the jurisdiction of the late Longinus Atundo while that of Kakamega remained under Bishop Philip Sulumeti. The Diocese has a total population of 888,588 Catholics. It has 106 ordained Diocesesan Priests, 2 Consolata priests 2 Society of Missions (SMA) priests, 3 Mill Hill priests, 450 religious Men and Women. We have 40 parishes among them 2 are under construction i.e Corpus Christi Parish Irenji and Our Lady Mother Mary comfort of the afflicted Bukaya. We have 1 pastoral centre, Catechetical College and one Minor Seminary, 280 Nursery schools 256 Catholic Sponsored Primary schools, 134 catholic secondary schools, 1 Teachers Training College and 15 Polytechnics. We also have 18 primary schools for physically and mentally challenged children, 2 orphanages and one Vocational Secondary School for Deaf Girls: St. Angela Mumias. The Diocese have two hospitals, 12 Health Units, 1 School of Nursing: St. Elizabeth school of Nursing Mukumu and 1 school of Clinical Medicine: St. Mary’s School of clinical Medicine Mumias. The diocese has five deaneries namely:

Death of Rev Fr. Alfred Manani Ingara

Son of the late Sylvester Ingara and late Rosa. The funeral mass was held on Friday 18/11/2017 at St. Peters’ Minor Seminary Mukumu from 10:00 a.m. followed by a burial at the same venue

Death of FR. Nyongesa

The Catholic Diocese of Kakamega regrets to announce the sudden death of Rev. Fr. Dennis Nyongesa alias “uncle Denno” following a tragic road accident on 4/8/2017 in Nairobi. He was son of the late Benjamin G. K. Wanjala and mama Rosalia Mukabana. He was ordained as a Diocesan priest on September 26th 1998 by RT. Rev Bishop Philip Sulumeti, the Bishop Emeritus. The funeral mass was held on Friday 11/8/2017 at St. Peters’ Minor Seminary Mukumu from 10:00 a.m. followed by a burial at the same venue.

New Parish

Bishop Obanyi on 15th August 2017, during the feast of the Assumption of our lady, officially opened a new parish at Indangalasia. The new parish called THe Assumption of Our Lady Indangalasia, becomes the 41st Parish in Kakamega Diocese and is under the Mission fathers of Vincent De Paul.
