The Catholic Diocese of Kakamega was created on 27th February 1978 having been separated from the Diocese of Kisumu. It covers the two counties that is Kakamega and Vihiga. The Diocese was evangelized by the Mill Hill Missionaries. Rt. Rev. Phillip Sulumeti, Bishop Emeritus of Kakamega from 1978 to 2015. On the 5th December 2014, His Holliness Pope Francis appointed Rt. Joseph Obanyi Sagwe as the Bishop of Kakamega. Rt. Rev Joseph Obanyi Sagwe was consecrated on 7th March 2015. The Diocese has about 950,000 Catholics. It has 116 Diocesan priests and about 8 Missionary priests. The diocese has several religious communities serving in various apostolates. The Diocese is involved in evangelization mission of Christ through education, Health and Social Ministry amidst others.
In 2028, the Diocese will celebrate 50 years of its creation. With this in mind, the Bishop Rt. Rev. Joseph Obanyi Sagwe is giving an opportunity for the Diocese to develop a renewed and practical Pastrol programme on where it wants to be. The Bishop is calling upon all to be involved in proposing which direction the Diocese has to take if it has to continue with the mission of evangelization in this region.
